Dirty teeth contain food debris that harbour a lot of infectious bacteria sticking to the teeth called the dental plaque. When this sticky plaque layer is not effectively removed by tooth brushing, it gets hardened over time forming tartar. Plaque and tartar contribute to bleeding gums, swollen gums, bad breath, loosening of gums, food lodgement which if left unattended spreads deeper into the bone resulting in difficulty in chewing, gradual loosening of teeth and ultimately loss of teeth. Gingivitis and it's successor, Periodontitis are a major cause of tooth loss other than tooth decay. But, both these conditions are preventable by maintaining a proper oral hygiene and regular dental follow-ups. Here are some tips to maintain good oral health- 1) Twice daily brushing and frequent rinsing 2) Dental check-ups twice a year and teeth scaling and polishing once a year or as per dentist's recommendation. 3) Flossing with a water flosser daily 4) Gum disease can be hereditary. If your parents/gransparents have lost most or all teeth early in life, you could be predisposed to gum dieases. Hence, visiting a Periodontist is necessary at regular intervals. If you face bleeding gums regularly while brushing, it's time for a teeth scaling and polishing appointment as bleeding gums is the 1st sign of gum problems. Early intervention often results in successful treatment. If you haven't had a teeth cleaning done in 2 years, do visit us soon!
