Teeth decay or cavities happen due to gradual bacterial decomposition of the hard tooth structure, making it soft and rubbery. Millions of bateria are present in the mouth. Sticky, processed food rich in sugar as well as aerated drinks make teeth susceptible to decay due to increase in bad bacteria and acidic environment in the mouth. Diets rich in fibre like raw salads and fruits help in cleansing the tooth surfaces. Teeth cavities need to be drilled, cleaned and filled with a tooth-colored composite filling material. Earlier intervention leads to lesser drilling and minimal damage to natural tooth structure. Teeth cavities do not pain at an early stage, pain occurs mostly when the cavity deepens and reaches close to the nerve. Such teeth demand deep fillings or root canal treatment and crown. Hence, a regular annual dental check-up is important to prevent dental cavities. Twice daily teeth brushing with a fluoridated toothpaste, frequent rinsing with water during the day and a balanced diet helps maintain a good oral health.
